Bigfoot Body Imprint Being Studied
Pocatello, Idaho [AP] -- Idaho State University anthropology professor Jeff Meldrum studies footprints to prove the so-called Sasquatch lives in the Northwest, and now he has a body imprint from southern Washington state.[Original headline: Are footprints those of Sasquatch?]
Meldrum is a member of the scientific team examining a plaster cast of what may be the first documented body imprint of a Bigfoot.
The imprint of what appears to be a large animal's left forearm, hip, thigh, and heel was discovered Sept. 22 near Mount Adams by a Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization expedition in the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest.
LeRoy Fish, a retired wildlife ecologist from Triangles Lake, Ore., Derek Randles, a landscape architect from Belfair, Wash. and Richard Noll, a meteorologist from Edmonds, Wash., discovered and cast the partial print.
Meldrum -- along with a retired physical anthropologist from Washington State University, a Canadian wildlife biologist, a retired Canadian journalist and an exotic animal handler -- examined the cast and agreed that it cannot be attributed to any commonly known Northwest animal, he said. It may represent an unknown great ape, the group concluded.
Meldrum's research in Pocatello includes comparative primate anatomy and the emergence of humans walking.
Several years ago, Meldrum and Richard Greenwell of the International Society of Cryptozoology camped in northern California's Siskiyou Wilderness. They found both tracks of what they considered a unique biped animal -- and their food was stolen and packs rifled without the typical signs associated with bears.
"I shun the accolade 'Bigfoot expert,"' he said Wednesday. "I know something about the current state of the evidence. It would be odd if I wasn't interested in another ape that moves like a human."
Meldrum said the recent muddy impression adds new information to the Bigfoot debate.
"It's not going to tip the scales one way or another," Meldrum said.

More than 200 pounds of plaster were needed to produce the cast of the entire impression. Other evidence documented by the party includes voice recordings and 17-inch footprints.
Preliminary measurements indicate its body dimensions are 40 percent to 50 percent greater than those of a 6-foot-tall human.

The Salt Lake Tribune / UT - October 27 2000Bigfoot Trackers Obtain Significant Evidence
Researchers in north-western USA say they've found an imprint which they claim proves the existence of Bigfoot.[Original headline: Bigfoot evidence 'uncovered' ]
The team of 14 tracked the elusive beast for a week deep in the mountains of the Gifford Pinchot national forest in Mason County, Washington State.
The imprint appears to be from a hair-covered body lying on its side, reaching over to get some fruit, the researchers said.
Thermal imaging confirmed that the body print was only hours old and the researchers said they created a 250lb plaster cast of what they say is the lower half of the Sasquatch.
"It dawned on us all at the same time, and it was overwhelming. These heel impressions weren't made by a person getting in the mud wallow and squirming around," said Dr Jeff Meldrum, of Idaho State University.
The trackers gathered hair samples that will be analysed by DNA testing.
They also made voice recordings of what they think is the Sasquatch wailing which will also be sent for analysis, reports the King5 website.
The creature is believed to be seven to eight feet tall, weighing 800 to 1,000 lbs and the researchers believe there are hundreds just like it throughout forests in the north-west.
