Wallaby Shock for Tourist

New sightings have confirmed reports of a colony of wild wallabies living in the West Sussex countryside - but wildlife experts are predicting that cold English winters will eventually kill them off.

A shocked tourist rang police when he saw a 4ft marsupial chewing away at a hedge at the side of the A27 near Arundel. But police officers were not surprised - the incident was the latest in a series over recent years between Chichester and Arundel, mainly around the A27 ``corridor.'' There have also been reports in the Patching and Littlehampton areas.

Sussex police wildlife liaison officer WPC Linda Batsleer said the wallabies had been roaming freely over quite an extensive area of West Sussex countryside. ``We reckon there is a group of at least six,'' she said.

The wallabies were believed to have escaped from captivity, and bred in the wild.
