News reporter Mark LaFlamme, of the Sun Journal in Lewiston, Maine, has e-mailed the following information today about recent unexplained events in his community:
"Last August, I wrote several stories on strange sounds and lights reported seen and heard in this area. The phenomenon was experienced by hundreds here and the stories spread far and wide. I was contacted by a slew of scientists and UFO enthusiasts for months after the original report. The week's worth of stories generated more feedback than any major story I've covered in eight years here.
"Thought I'd give you the head's up that I'm currently working on another report of strange lights seen in this area. Unlike last year, I was able to view the phenomenon myself this time. I joined a group of a half dozen people in a field out in a remote area of Lewiston. They had been watching a repeating pattern of lights that began as a hovering light that grew brighter and more intense for several moments. The lights would then dim while maintaining the same position. It would then streak off to the south, dimming further as it went and ultimately disappearing. This repeated itself at least a dozen times, with the light returning to the same location in the sky each time. For several minutes, the light would appear as just a star in the sky, until the brightness began to increase. At this point, it appeared as a spotlight drawing closer, though the object did not appear to move. Very strange. I watched for an hour and the lights were still appearing and disappearing as I left. The original group had already been watching for 90 minutes when I arrived.
I didn't report on the incident the night it was reported. As far as I could tell, it was only this small group of people and myself who witnessed it. I checked with weather services, police and others but heard of no other reported sightings.
"Late last night, however, I received calls from people in a nearby town called Greene. They reported ominous lights with the same characteristics as those seen over Lewiston the night before. I'll be checking into the phenomenon today and possibly reporting my findings."
