Scottish Photographer Captures Something More Than A Helicopter
When Scotsman Stephen.P.Dymock heard what sounded like a low flying aircraft he reached for his digital camera in order to record the event. There had been recent reports of low budget airlines flying their aircraft too low over towns while on approach to an airport and having witnessed one such event the night before, Stephen was on the alert.
Instead, what flew into view on the morning of June 27 above his home in Cairnhill, Airdree, was a police helicopter used by the Strathclyde police, but he decided to take a picture anyway. Examining the image on his camera's LCD screen Stephen noticed, "there were not one but two objects in the sky".
In an Inside Scotland news report published shortly after the event, Stephen told how on transferring the image to his computer he was startled to see what appeared to be a UFO in the sky located just above the helicopter.
"Some people might say I uploaded the image onto the PC and then put in the object. For that reason, I have kept the image on the camera to prove it was in the sky at the time and not a fake or doctored photo," said Stephen.
"It's too big to be a bird. It's going up or down at an angle - I think up - so it's not a balloon.
"It's not another aircraft and there are no visible signs of wings and, if it was, then that would be a near miss as they do not seem to be that far apart.
Stephen concluded: "So what it is, I don't know but since it's unidentified, it's flying, and it's an object, for all intents and purposes it's a UFO."
Following the incident, an Airdie police spokesman said they had not received any reports of mysterious objects in the sky.
FarShores thanks Stephen for sending a copy of the original image and providing an opportunity of examining this anomaly in greater detail. Using imaging software, here is my conclusion:
Here the 'UFO' has been isolated from the rest of the picture. It was also subjected to enlargement accompanied by an edge-smoothing process.
A slice from the frame featuring both helicopter and UFO appears in duplicate images here. On the left it remains untouched, while on the right flood fill has been used. Note that the helicopter has been virtually washed out, while the UFO remains in sharp contrast.
Look again at the original larger image featured at the top of this page. Stephen photographed the helicopter through a window. It is the opinion of FarShores that the 'UFO' is most likely an insect that alighted briefly on the glass, or may even have been filmed in mid-flight, as the isolated enlargement appears to show. That it remains virtually complete, following the application of flood fill, is most likely due to it is position between the camera and light source on the inside of the door - unlike the helicopter. Stephen would have been concentrating on events taking place in the sky and with his eye to the viewfinder, or LCD screen, is unlikely to have even noticed the insect.

Read Stephen's response to my suggestion:
ha ha ha...i nearly laughed my socks off....
did you look at the image....you say an insect
look again if the object is an insect close to the camera...then what the hell is the size of tha handle on the window....
do not insult me ..by coming out with this crap
look again...as i have said to others...look with your eyes and not with your closed mind
the object is on the other side of the glass window...not that further than the helicopter is from the camera...if it was that close to the camera. then for one it would appear in front of the glass and would appear more clear i.e. you would see it's features......i say again ..my spelling may be crap...but i'm know fool......it is not a bug/a/bird/or some form of toy throwen into the air.......if it was ....then the likes of dr richard.haines would not be looking at it...
my advice to you and people like you is this
look before you leep
it maybe an old saying but it's true
focus on the facts....why are people so quick to say it's a bug/bird/dirt on the window.......
i have a thing to say to you and your non beleivers
prove me wrong
i have the image on the memory card inside the camera
i over you a challenge
the ball is in your court
...
your move
