MYSTERIOUS BLUE LIGHT IN SKY
Posted July 19.05

(original headline: That was no UFO - it was just dust ) A COUPLE of Worcestershire residents claim to have solved the mystery of an odd blue light spotted in the county's skies.

Paul Pritchard, of Mount Pleasant Barns, Pershore, was left scratching his head after spotting the blue light running from the horizon up into the sky while he was driving home from Worcester.

He spotted it at about 9.15pm on Tuesday when was about four miles out of the city on the A4538 past the roundabout for Crowle and Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

He first thought it looked like a tornado but noticed it was still and added it was possible it could have been someone shining a powerful beam.

There was speculation it could have been something to do with flying saucers, but founder member of the Worcester Astronomical Society Andy O'Hare, of Merriman's Hill Road, Barbourne, Worcester, said it was actually what is known as a sun pillar - a phenomenon caused by light hitting ice and dust in the upper atmosphere.

"There are lots of things which people might describe as UFOs which can be explained by astronomical phenomena," he added.

And John Farrell, of Dovecote Road, Droitwich, was up in a hot air balloon with friends at the time and said he also saw it.

"It's quite an interesting phenomenon but it was just the sunset, with a bit of cloud in one place and the rest of the sky being lighter than one part of it," he added.

A motorist has been left scratching his head in puzzlement after spotting a mysterious blue light in the sky.

Dance business Dance at 8 owner Paul Pritchard, of Mount Pleasant Barns, Pershore, was driving back from work in Worcester at about 9.15pm on Tuesday when he spotted the light.

He was about four miles out of the city on the A4538 past the roundabout for Crowle and Worcestershire Royal Hospital when he first caught sight of it and described it as a distinct straight blue line of light running from the horizon up into the sky.

"I thought it was the windscreen playing tricks on me at first with the sun going down but I got out of the car and went into a field and had a look at it.

"The cloud didn't appear to cross over it though and the sun going down didn't seem to affect it in any way.

Mr Pritchard first thought it looked like a tornado but said he noticed it was incredibly still and added it was possible it could have been someone shining a powerful beam up into the sky. He is now keen to see if anyone else noticed it.

"I've never seen anything quite like it before or anything quite so distinct - it seems like it was some sort of phenomenon that occurred," he added.

Steve Poole, chairman of UFO Research Midlands (UFORM) - which is holding a 10th anniversary event in Stourbridge Town Hall on Sunday - said he had not heard of similar reports and that they would log the incident to see if anyone else spotted it.

"It's very difficult for me to speculate without an in-depth conversation with the man who saw it but it's probably something astronomical and fairly self-explanatory," he added.

Anyone who thinks they may have had a similar sighting can contact UFORM via their website: www.uform.org or via their hotline on 07941 833842.

(Original headline: Did you see the UFO? )

When Corinne Dainton woke in the middle of the night and saw bright lights seeping through her bedroom window she thought nothing of it.

But the next day neighbours revealed they had also spotted the mystery lights - and believe Bracknell was being visited by an alien spacecraft hovering above the nearby Coppid Beech Hotel at John Nike Way.

The drama started soon after midnight on Wednesday, June 22.

Mrs Dainton, of Fletcher Gardens, Popeswood, said: "I remember seeing bright lights coming through the window.

"But one of my neighbours actually saw an oval-shaped object above the hotel. When she phoned the MoD they told her it was probably an airship.

"But how can it have been an airship that appeared in the middle of the night then just disappeared into nowhere."

This week, Whitehall officials were denying they had launched an inquiry into the Bracknell UFO incident.

An MoD spokeswoman said: "The MoD would not investigate these sightings unless UK airspace had been compromised by hostile or foreign air activity."
