An unidentified luminous object was visible in the night sky over Shandong for approximately 10 minutes on the night of June 11, before disappearing .
Among the many witnesses to the event was Miss Wang Kun, who lives in Qingdao. She thought at first the light was of an aircraft but soon realised that it wasn't and ran to find a camera.
She described the object as having "a dark red luminous body," heading east from the northwest in a circular movement".
The same phenomenon was also seen at 19:55 by students of nearby Qingdao University of Science and Technology, who used their cell phone cameras to record its passing during cloudy conditions.
Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Observatory examined all the photo's the next morning and dismissed the idea of the light being a lantern due to its extreme height.
