The journalist Juan Jose Benitez says that the process of declassification of the Spanish Air Force UFO files, carried out since 1992, has been a 'fraud', as he claims included in the files are the findings of a group of civilian skeptics.

This group of civilians, said Benitez, was headed by Juan Vicente Ballester Olmos, Research Director of the Anomaly Foundation , a skeptic of the UFO phenomenon, Manuel Borraz, Juan Antonio Fernandez Peris, Miguel Guasp, Joan Plana, Willy Smith and Javier Armentia, director of the Pamplona Planetarium.
Their names and their work on the declassification UFO files was 'secret', according to Benitez, in a total of 58 confidential letters delivered in 2004 that Willy Smith, PhD in Physics from the University of Michigan (United States), UFO expert and researcher, who died in 2006.
Benitez says that the findings of these people were sent to the Air Force and that, if deemed appropriate, were included in the declassified reports.
Between 1992 to1998, 83 UFO files were declassified, with just over eight hundred thousand pages, a process that, according to Benitez, was' a fraud, 'and that the documents should have been released "without any kind of manipulation' .
The investigator said to Efe, in these letters, 'can be clearly seen that the real interest was to refute the phenomenon on the part of this so-called group of 'council consultants', which explained away the UFO cases as having been balloons or the planet Venus.
For example, Benitez highlighted one of the best-known cases of the UFO phenomenon, which took place in 1975 at the firing range of Bardenas Reales, in Navarra and is described in the dossier as the sighting of a helicopter.
For his part, astrophysicist and director of the Pamplona Planetarium, Javier Armentia, told Efe that has helped in this process of declassification of records, but stressed that Benitez 'mixed data with their views and also in the spirit offending'.
Ballester Olmos, says Armentia, contacted him to ask his personal opinion about some cases documented in the reports, 'with the request that they be treated with discretion, which I find perfectly normal and lawful'.
After receiving the commission he explained, 'I did what I know', which is studying the data in order to "see if there was any explanation for this astronomical sighting 'in order to develop' a plausible hypothesis'.
Armentia, a member of the Society for the Advancement of Critical Thinking, has ensured that Ballester 'contacted me in my capacity as astrophysicist, not my opinion, which has always been public on the phenomenon of flying saucers'.
FYI the above files were deposited in 1998 at the Air General Headquarters Library in Madrid. They covered UFO incidents recorded between 1962 and 1995.

"According to letter signed by Walters, Hunneeus, and Fernandez, Smith did not have a PhD in physics and did not have a master's degree in Astronomy from the University of Michigan. El periodista navarro Juan José Benítez asegura que el proceso de desclasificación del archivo OVNI del Ejército del Aire español, realizado desde 1992, ha sido un 'fraude', ya que, según afirma, en los expedientes se incluyeron conclusiones de un grupo de civiles 'escépticos' con el fenómeno.
Benítez asevera en un comunicado, que remite a un informe más amplio de su página web (<www.jjbenitez.com), que un grupo de siete civiles -seis españoles y un estadounidense- colaboraron con el Servicio de Inteligencia Militar del Ejército del Aire en la desclasificación de los expedientes, pero con el objetivo de 'refutar' los avistamientos.
Este grupo de civiles, señala Benítez, estuvo encabezado por Vicente Juan Ballester Olmos, director de investigaciones de la Fundación Anomalía, entidad escéptica con el fenómeno OVNI,y compuesta asimismo por Manuel Borraz, Juan Antonio Fernández Peris, Miguel Guasp, Joan Plana, Willy Smith y Javier Armentia, director del Planetario de Pamplona.
Los nombres de estas personas y su trabajo 'secreto' en la desclasificación OVNI figura, según indica Benítez, en un total de 58 cartas confidenciales que entregó en 2004 Willy Smith, doctor en Física de la Universidad de Michigan (Estados Unidos), experto en energía atómica e investigador ufológico, fallecido en 2006.
Benítez afirma que las conclusiones de estas personas eran remitidas al Ejército del Aire y éste, si lo consideraba oportuno, las incluía en los informes desclasificados.
Entre 1992 y 1998 fueron desclasificados ochenta y tres expedientes OVNI, con algo más de mil ochocientos folios, un proceso que, en opinión de Benítez, fue 'un fraude', ya que los documentos deberían haber sido liberados 'sin ningún tipo de manipulación'.
El investigador navarro ha comentado a Efe que, en estas cartas, 'se ve con claridad que lo que interesaba era refutar como fuera el fenómeno' por parte de este llamado 'consejo de consultores', que explicaron los casos OVNI 'afirmando que se trataba de un globo sonda o del planeta Venus'.
Por ejemplo, ha resaltado Benítez, uno de los casos más conocidos del fenómeno OVNI, el que tuvo lugar en 1975 en el polígono de tiro de las Bardenas Reales, en Navarra, es explicado en el expediente como el avistamiento de un helicóptero.
Por su parte, el astrofísico y director del Planetario de Pamplona, Javier Armentia, ha indicado a Efe que colaboró en este proceso de desclasificación de expedientes, pero ha resaltado que Benítez 'mezcla los datos con sus opiniones y además con ánimo injurioso'.
Ballester Olmos, ha indicado Armentia, se puso en contacto con él para pedirle su opinión personal sobre algunos casos recogidos en los informes, 'con la petición de que los tratara con discreción, cosa que me parece perfectamente normal y lícita'.
Tras recibir el encargo, ha explicado, 'yo hice lo que sé', que es estudiar los datos y 'comprobar si había alguna explicación astronómica para ese avistamiento' con el fin de elaborar 'una hipótesis plausible'.
Armentia, miembro de la Sociedad para el Avance del Pensamiento Crítico, ha asegurado que Ballester 'se puso en contacto conmigo en mi condición de astrofísico, no por mi opinión, que siempre ha sido pública, sobre el fenómeno de los platillos volantes'.
