London Area Light No UFO Say Other Witnesses
[Original headline: Callers quash UFO claims]
An explanation has been offered for a UFO mystery in Rickmansworth.
Mr George Cross, of Colne Mead, claimed he saw a round object with lights around the rim at 1.15am on Sunday, August 26.
Several calls to The Watford Observer have suggested te object was, in fact, a helicopter.
Mrs Joyce Edwards, of Uxbridge Road, said: "It woke me up just after 1am, but it was definitely a low-flying helicopter. It was lit up but it did not look like a circle."
She added: "When Mr Cross must have seen it, it was stationary and hovering in the sky. At one stage there were searchlights coming out of it."
Police have confirmed there was a helicopter in the area at the time.
A spokesman said: "The helicopter was up from 1am to 1.30am, assisting in a search following theft from a motor vehicle in Uxbridge Road."
However, Mr Cross said: "It was no helicopter. It made a completely different sound. I just wish I had taken a photograph. "
Mr Gordon Creighton, editor of the Flying Saucer Review, who lives in Cedars Avenue, Rickmansworth, said: "I should think it probably was a helicopter.
"The one thing about UFOs is that you can never hear them, or maybe just a faint sound."
